Stem Cell Therapy
Ms. Mahalakshmi conducted a current awareness session on the topic Stem Cell therapy for Grades 3 to 5. The Session started by giving few pictures for identification. Students were able to understand the importance and advantage of Stem cell therapy. Introduction was given on the important human parts like brain, liver, heart and kidney which are made up of trillions of cells. Carnea transplant which is the first successful human Carnial transplant in UK at April 2005 was also shared. Students were also made to understand the disadvantage of chemotherapy which kills not only the affected cells but also the healthy ones. Discussion about stem cells, potential of stem cell, how stem cells are studied and culture medium which helps to store the stem cell were also briefed to the children as per their level of understanding. Finally in order to check their comprehension, questions were raised which the children answered confidently.
The same topic was dealt by Ms Anandi for grades 6 to 8. As an introduction to the topic, explanation about the basic nature of Cell and the difference between Cell & Stem Cell were discussed. The division stages of Cells were explained. Further to that pluripotency and toti potency of the cell nature was briefed. The extraction of the Stem Cells from the human body was made clear through pictures. Medicinal uses of stem cell therapy for respective diseases like heart disease, bone disease, In vitro fertilization and cloning technology were talked about. In order to make the children more interactive, familiar transplantations like hair transplantation, bone transplantation etc were discussed. Videos were used to explain the Preservation of stem cells in the laboratories. The session was interactive and almost all the queries raised by the students were addressed.
