Report on Vinayagar chathurthi - September 22, 2012.
The inspiration of celebrating the vinayagar chathurthi was to make the children understand the tradition behind that day. We started our celebration by decorating the room with flowers and our beautiful kids installed the mud idol of Lord Ganesha with a Pooja. Shalini Pandian – Faculty IT department presented the information presentation started with a mantra, it includes the Birth story of Lord Ganesha and why he got the Gajasura’s head , the elephant demon.
Info on the birthday significance of Lord Ganesha on the month of Baadhrapada, Hindu calendar in the Shukla Chathurthi was provided to the kids. The way of doing pooja , like offering red flowers, 21 blades of Duruva grass, 21 Moodhaks , breaking coconuts and reciting slogans and singing songs, the visarjan i.e., immersion of idols on Anantha Chaturdashi with huge crowd move in a procession carrying idols of Lord Ganesha by saying “Ganpathi Bappa moraya" were all shared with the children.
The history behind the public celebration by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaja , the great Maratha ruler, to promote culture and nationalism, and then by the freedom fighter Lokmanya Balagangadara Tilak to spread the message of freedom struggle and to protest British were taken to the children on this occasion.
The children were packed with enjoyment by seeing the videos of Lord Ganesha’s dance with his mouse and his friends wishing his birthday with Moodhaks and Laddoos. Finally their palm was crammed with Lord Ganesha’s special neivedhiyam, “Kozhukattai and Sundal” .
